World Toilet Day has been observed by the United Nations since 2013. It raises awareness among people living without access to safely managed sanitation facilities. Access to sanitation and drinking water are catalysts for all aspects of sustainable development and provide critical resilience against the impacts of climate change.

The theme of World Toilet Day 2023 is: “Accelerating Change”. With just seven years left, the world must work five times faster on average to meet the sanitation target of Sustainable Development Goal 6 – giving all people access to safe toilets and water – by 2030. The hummingbird is the symbol of World Toilet Day 2023. In old stories, a hummingbird attempts to extinguish a fire by delivering tiny droplets of water with its beak. Her efforts, while small, help solve a major problem. Everyone has the ability to take action to solve the health crisis. We can all be hummingbirds!
